<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nBeing put into lockdown\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for<\/span><\/span> client and staff safety<\/span><\/span> provided the ideal opportunity to adapt services<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>find<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>new ways to continue treating our patients, while abiding by the government restrictions. The below example of how we maintained Riley’s rehabilitative goals remotely is a great demonstration of how we at Kentdale Referrals were able to help our patients during lockdown.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Riley’s Profile <\/p>\n <\/p>\n In his first physiotherapy session, Riley presented with significant muscle wastage and weakness in both back legs. Consequentially, he had developed several\u00a0\u00a0compensatory adjustments in his posture and in how he moved. From a postural perspective, he adopted a wide behind stance and offloaded both hindlimbs in a stand, shifting his weight forward. Dynamically, he was unstable during walking with short hindlimb strides and reduced joint flexion. He stepped with an outwardly placed stride in both back legs, with his tail held high and to the left. Upon palpation, he had significant muscle wastage in his bottom and inner and outer thigh muscle groups in both back legs. Additionally, he also had compensatory spasm in the top of his neck and in both shoulder muscles.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Riley\u2019s rehabilitative goals include:<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Lockdown did not hinder achieving these goals. <\/span><\/span>We are now\u00a0<\/span><\/span>using video\u00a0<\/span><\/span>physiotherapy\u00a0<\/span><\/span>consultations<\/span><\/span>\u00a0where<\/span><\/span>\u00a0applicable.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>These enabled<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Genie, one of our Veterinary Physiotherapists<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0remotely\u00a0<\/span><\/span>re-<\/span><\/span>assess\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Riley<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>successfully<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>adapt<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>his<\/span><\/span>\u00a0home treatment plan\u00a0<\/span><\/span>accordingly. This<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>allowed<\/span><\/span>\u00a0us to c<\/span><\/span>onsistently\u00a0<\/span><\/span>develop<\/span><\/span>\u00a0his<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>progress and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>performance<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at a safe rate<\/span><\/span>\u00a0from the comfort of his home<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before remote video consultations, Genie <\/span>asked<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>R<\/span>i<\/span>ley\u2019s owners to\u00a0<\/span>send<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>videos\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>him<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>walking\u00a0<\/span>on the lead<\/span>, with specific instructions to comply with the\u00a0<\/span>requirements of a\u00a0<\/span>dynamic assessment.\u00a0<\/span>The videos prove to be useful, particularly when clients have poor <\/span>WiFi<\/span> connections (<\/span>which lead to moments of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>pixelated screen<\/span>\u00a0quality\u00a0<\/span>during consultations), and act as<\/span> a wonderful comparison tool. In this instance, it helped us gauge <\/span>Riley\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0progress or\u00a0<\/span>identify<\/span> any deterioration in his movement.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During the video consult,\u00a0<\/span>Genie\u00a0<\/span>examined<\/span> Riley’s<\/span>\u00a0free moving<\/span>\u00a0gait<\/span>\u00a0and motion<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>She<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>guided<\/span>\u00a0his<\/span>\u00a0owners\u00a0<\/span>through performing<\/span>\u00a0selected <\/span>checks<\/span>\u00a0to determine his progress<\/span>,<\/span> which were <\/span>needed to<\/span>\u00a0amend his\u00a0<\/span>rehabilitative\u00a0<\/span>exercises.\u00a0<\/span>As a team, they were able to be<\/span> creative by <\/span>safely using household items<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to establish a<\/span>\u00a0physio gym at home<\/span> for his <\/span>exercise\u00a0<\/span>progression<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>After the video consult<\/span>, Genie customised Riley\u2019s home treatment plan based on the findings and discussions within the video consultation and emailed it to Riley\u2019s owners. <\/span>The plan was made up of a variety of manual therapies and rehabilitative exercises specifically aimed at achieving Riley\u2019s rehabilitative goals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Riley<\/span> is now progressing well with his owner\u2019s hard work and continued support from Genie.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n For further information on how we can support you and your pet with remote\u00a0<\/span>physiotherapy\u00a0<\/span>consultations<\/span>,<\/span> once referred by your primary veterinarian, please contact us<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Being put into lockdown\u00a0for client and staff safety provided the ideal opportunity to adapt services\u00a0and\u00a0find\u00a0new ways to continue treating our patients, while abiding by the government restrictions.
