As in humans, fractures are relatively common in both dogs and cats. The type of fractures that occur can vary greatly and with that there are a wide range of treatments available.
Whilst fractures can be distressing for both the pet and owner, the positive news is that, with the correct treatment, most fractures in dogs and cats will heal well with the majority of animals regaining normal use of their limbs.
Treatment options
The best treatment for most pets is to undergo a surgical procedure in which the broken bones are realigned and stabilised. Options for stabilising the bones include:
- Bone plates and screws
- Pins that are placed inside the bone
- External frames that are connected to the bone using pins going through the skin.
Some fractures are relatively simple to manage, and others are very complex, necessitating considerable orthopaedic instrumentation, implants, and expertise.
Our fixed-price packages are based on a simple fracture of the radius/ ulna or tibia/ fibula, if you require an estimate for a more complex fracture, please contact our team directly.
Concurrent conditions
All fixed-price packages include the surgery required to treat a single, commonly diagnosed clinical condition. Should the clinical condition be more complex (e.g. a complex fracture e.g. comminuted/ double plated), or should the patient have medical co-morbidities (e.g., BOAS, diabetes, heart disease, hypothyroidism, etc) a supplemental charge may be applied.
Advanced Imaging
Should CT be required this will be in addition to the package price.

Post-op pain relief and antibiosis (if required) will be prescribed for up to 14 days. At the discretion of the surgeon, a 14-day supply of anti-anxiety medication may be included in addition to the above to aid with restricting your pet whilst recuperating. Hospitalisation prior to surgery is only included if this is deemed necessary by the surgeon and is limited to a maximum of 24 hours. If your pet has an external fixator fitted, two follow-up consultations +/- adjustment of the frame will be included. Any further prescriptions or bandage changes supplied by Kentdale Referrals incur a supplemental charge.
Hospitalisation for longer than 48 hours post-op will be payable at our standard fees. Initial Physiotherapy guidance at discharge will be given; however, further sessions are not included in the package price.
